Fauna4

From Felarya

Jump to: navigation, search

The Felayan fauna is composed of many species from many worlds which makes it very varied and unpredictable. See also carnivorous plants and plant life. These pages feature mostly dangerous or remarkable creatures. There is many many others, from small animals to harmless herbivores, or unreported species that aren't listed here but exist and are part of the great Felarya food chain. Because the page is reaching the maximum size, here is the first part of the fauna : Fauna, second : Fauna2, and third : Fauna3

Note about the threat ranking:

It's based on the threat that the creature represents for a normal human. It's not necessarily linked to the strength of the creature. For example the dryad Cypress would rank very low because she is very friendly to humans, yet she is a powerful being.

Rank:

  • Minimal: A totally harmless being such as a mouse or a rabbit.
  • Very Low: Mostly herbivores but who can still strike back if attacked.
  • Low: Various animals such as felines.
  • Moderate: A moderately dangerous Felaryan creature can still be very dangerous in another world. For example a great white shark would rank between Low and Moderate here...
  • Medium: A predatory, dangerous and often man-eating creature.
  • High: A great predator. Crisis is in this category.
  • Very High: A top predator. This creature could take on a small army.
  • Critical: In Felaryan scales, very few creatures reach this rank.
  • Extreme: A guardian or a mythical creature. Only a god can hope to survive a confrontation with one of these.

[edit] In lake of illusions

[edit] Thaniathan

Size: 47 feet
Threat: Medium

The Thaniathan is apparently a one of a kind beast that lives in the Lake of Illusion, waiting for prey to be drawn near by the lake's power. It usual form of attack is to wait until the creature is as deep as they can go, then swim up rapidly under them, hitting them with all of it's strength, usually stunning them and knocking them high in the air. It then catches and swallows them whole. If the Thanatian's saliva gets into a creatures bloodstream, say via a bite, the creature is almost instantly paralyzed until the saliva has run it's course. It's impossible to tell how long this takes, because the creature is eaten soon afterwards. The Thaniathan will eat anything that's alive and meaty, and it's hard scales protect it from most forms of normal attack.

This creature is capable of staying completely still for months at a time, and it's digestion is slow enough that it can survive that long with no food.

[edit] Rainbow Manta

Size: 20 to 30 feet
Threat: Medium

A large creature resembling a manta. They are usually about twenty feet long, with a flat and wide body, and a huge gaping mouth. Their large pectoral fins resemble wings more than fins, and they can use them to leap from the water and majestically glide above the surface for long distances. Rainbow mantas are actually not fishes and can stay out of water for a very long time. They can even crawl on solid ground, albeit very clumsily.

Their names come from their semi-transparent body that is iridescent in multiple colors when in sunlight. A bank of leaping rainbow mantas on a sunny day is a breath-taking sight. As beautiful as that can be, they are also dangerous however, and can easily swallow an human whole. They seem primarily attracted by magic-rich creatures, such as fairies or mages.

[edit] Azure Frog

Size: 15 to 20 feet
Threat: Moderate

A large, shiny blue frog. These creatures can be found only near the lake of illusions. They are voracious and swallow anything that they catch with their long sticky tongue that fits in their large mouth. What make them especially dangerous is the basic spells they use. They can throw a sort of mind blast that makes the target dizzy and confused, and they can use a sort of short range instant teleport spell as well.

[edit] In Sea depths

[edit] Shinade

Size: 10 inches
Threat: Low to Moderate in group

Shinades are essentially deep-sea piranhas equipped with high-beam, forward light-producing organs. They swim in schools, completely unlit. When they find possible prey, they surround it, then harshly illuminate it with a flash comparable to looking at a bolt of lightning striking just in front of you. The sudden change from extremely dim to extremely bright is usually enough to stun most creatures; then they all converge and quickly dine before something that's seen the huge flash comes to investigate. This adaptation has made them well-equipped to prey on such creatures as abyssal discs or shadow fishes.

[edit] In grove of carnivorous plants

[edit] Steam Scorpion

Size: 20 feet
Threat: Moderate

A large species of scorpion, living mostly in undergrowth vegetation. They are rather similar to other scorpions, aside from their glowing red eyes and the scythe like appendages in place of claws. They possess the strange ability to discharge toxic steam from their shell like a steam machine, and they use this when they want to intimidate an opponent, or when they are preparing to charge. The steam quickly becomes non-toxic after a short period of time in contact with the air. Steam scorpions are rather peaceful toward humans though, and feed mostly on other insects and spiders. They are extremely territorial however, and if you inadvertently enter their lair you will be faced with an enraged mass of chitin, toxic steam, and blades that can cut through a tree when charging at full speed.

[edit] Titan Chameleon

Size: 40 to 60 feet
Threat: High

Chameleons are known for their ability to blend into their surroundings, allowing them to remain unseen. The Titan Chameleon takes this ability one step further by using total invisiblity ! Countless adventurers going through the grove suddenly found a sticky tongue adhering itself to their body and pulling them into a mouth seemingly opening from thin air. Only when moving, the chameleon becomes partially visible, and even then it's little more than a shimmer in the air, outlining it's huge body. Their tongue is very sticky, and once it is attached to you, there is little hope of escape. The Titan Chameleon can also capture prey incredibly fast. They have been known to devour entire parties of travelers in mere seconds. Fortunately they remain rare and are only found in the Grove of carnivorous plants.

[edit] In great rocky fields

[edit] Storm Manticore

Size: 50 feet
Threat: High

Storm manticores are mythical creatures, distant cousins of chimeras, creatures with the body of a lion, grey or blue fur, bat wings, and a scorpion tail. While most manticores have the head of a human, storm manticores possess a leonine one.

Storm manticores are known for their very loud roar that can echoes for miles, and their deadly venom. They are fearsome and voracious beasts who won't hesitate to attack heavily-armed caravans. With their incredible speed, powerful claws, and chain lightning spells, these monsters pose an enormous threat to travelers and can devastate a convoy in only a few minutes.

Moreover, the poison in their tail can drop a centaur dead in just a few stings and even the proud sphinx will sometimes give up a meal, rather than risk getting stung in a dispute with an angry manticore. Fortunately these monsters are rather rare and solitary creatures.

[edit] Greater Stormseeker

Size: 50 to 60 feet
Threath: Medium - very high for vehicles.

Huge, strangely shaped red birds, able to attract lightning with their beaks during a storm, "store" it in them, and later blast it at targets with great precision. This particular species of stormseeker is infinitely more dangerous than their smaller cousins. The tremendous storms of the Great rocky fields allowed them to grow to gigantic proportions.

While small stormseekers feed on lightning and insects, the greater stormseekers have absolutely no problems hunting humans. They blast their prey with just the right amount of energy required to stun it before devouring it. The enormous amounts of energy they can deliver in their electrical attack makes them a critical threat to machines and vehicles.

[edit] In Venmys-Pieaug Library

[edit] Book Wyrm

Size: varies
Threath: Medium

Massive serpents with the ability to alter their size in order to burrow their way into books, their dwelling of choice. Book Wyrms typically eat the inside of a tome over the course of several decades sustaining itself off of the contents of the pulp and ink in the paper. They only return to their full size when said book is opened, at which point they quickly enlarge, devour the shocked would-be-reader whole and quickly return from whence they came.

[edit] Buvikis Veridimis

Size:
Threath: Under Construction

[edit] In Sandfall maze

[edit] Sandfall Lurker

Size: 14 feet
Threath: Medium

A quick moving creature that resembles a huge mandible-less crab. They have a large gaping mouth they use to swallow prey in lieu of using their missing mandibles. These creatures are not very resistant to damage but must still be viewed as very dangerous, because of their jumping ability. Much like an over-sized flea, the lurker can stay perfectly immobile, then one second later, leap into the air at a phenomenal speed. Combined with their ability to quickly dig through the sandstone of the great cliffs forming the maze, it means a sandfall lurker can and will chase its prey anywhere till it has gulped it. Many adventurers have fallen victim to their mobility. Afterward, the creature will burrow itself into the sand to quietly digest its meal.

[edit] Sandfish

Size: 10 to 18 feet
Threath: Moderate

These strange creatures resemble a mix of a very exotic brown fish and a sand-polished log. They lurk in the sand, patiently waiting for a prey to come by. They have the strange ability to move while their body seems to be completely immobile.

[edit] Tunneler Worm

Size: 100 to 200 feet
Threat: Low

An enormous worm that slowly digs through sand and sandstone, leaving solidified tunnels in its wake. They are strong and sturdy creatures, but very peaceful and pretty harmless unless you are in their way. If you are, you risk being engulfed and quickly digested in the remarkably efficient stomach of the creature.

[edit] In Akaptor desert

[edit] Sand Walker

Size: 16 feet tall
Threat: Very Low

A species of large running birds living in the desert. Their very long legs are immune to the time effect of the sand, making them an ideal mount on which to cross Akaptor desert. They are fast and very agile and also voracious, feeding mostly on small live animals they catch with their very long beaks, and they can become quite unpredictable when hungry. They are invaluable in some of the most treacherous places of the desert, such as the sea of sinking sand. Sand walkers are one of the few creatures who can run on its unstable surface without being engulfed.

Sand walkers are also very intelligent animals, and the Akaptor nomads say that they are actually as smart as humans! Sand walkers only give rides through the desert to those that they like. If forced, they'll either try to throw the rider off, or take them to a cactus dryad, or to another desert predator.

[edit] Antillon

Size: 50 to 80 feet long
Threat: Medium

This dangerous worm-like creature spends most of its life underground and stays in the same place until it dies. They dig a funnel-shaped crater in the sand, and lurk at the bottom, waiting for a prey to approach. The Antillon can sense living beings from very far away through the ground by the thousands of hairs along its body. When the prey comes in range the Antillon shakes the ground aggressively, causing the prey to fall down in to the pit, right into it's large mouth.

[edit] Time Shark

Size: 40 feet long
Threat: High

This creature resembles a large black and white manta ray more than it resembles an actual shark, though their shark like fin on their tops is the first part of them to appear when they emerge from the sand, making them seem to be a shark at first glance. Gliding quickly and dexterously, they use three ventral whip-like tentacles to strike at their targets and bring prey to their large gaping mouths. They are extremely dangerous and master a powerful time-based magic with an ease that puzzles many mages.

Even before the fight starts, a group of adventurers would find themselves slowed down while the time shark hastes itself. Then the creature would manipulate time, either going back a few seconds into the past if things started to go poorly for them, or separating each adventurer into a different string of time in order to take them one by one, or even stopping time entirely for the most powerful specimens.

Needless to say an encounter with a time shark is almost always fatal... Only the Akaptor nomads know how to efficiently fight a time shark and even they consider an attack a very serious matter. Fortunately, in Felarya time sharks can only be found in the Akaptor desert, and even there they rarely appear so long as you don't attract attention to yourself, say by touching the sand.

[edit] Solar Serpent

Size:
Threat: Under Construction

[edit] Suna

Size: 20 to 30 feet
Threat: Medium

The Suna is a giant desert bird that dives in and out of the sand, like a fish in water. Its believed they lived long ago near the ocean where they used to catch underwater prey this way, and adapted it to the desert. Like most birds, Suna are perfectly capable of flight after resurfacing. They don't hold any immunity to the effects of the sand, however they seem to have a sense of where the sand will take them and can escape anything awaiting them with relative ease. Sunas are dangerous. They use their "time diving" to catch their prey, and there are few things more unsettling than seeing a giant bird suddenly burst out of the sand from nowhere, with a wide open beak to devour you!

[edit] Kura

Size: 6 to 14 inches
Threat: Minimal

A Kura is similar to a hermit crab, with a reddish tan colored shell that looks like a rock. They are scavengers, renowned for their delicious flesh, and seen as a delicacy among neko cultures. Kura are very territorial though, and will protect their habitat at all costs, despite their size. Another of their particularities is their shells, which they use to store water. Knowing this fact has saved the life of many lost adventurers in the desert.

[edit] Beast of the past

Size: varies
Threat: varies

A generic term that design these gigantic creatures that roamed Felarya millenias ago. In the present time the only thing that can be seen of them are ghostly mirages that sometimes wander the land. Most of these harmless ghosts appear to have a definite reptilian look and often sport strange and alien features on their bodies. They still exist in the past Akaptor though, and as soon as you touch the sand, you are in deep deep trouble if one of these behemoths spot you. From the rare reports depicting a confrontation, they are formidable creatures, incredibly resistant and dangerous, putting to shame many predators of the present Felarya.

[edit] In Sunken forest

[edit] Ringhorn

Size: 10 feet
Threat: Low

A strange gravity-defying creature. Ringhorn ressemble a majestic goat with pupil-less teal eyes that seem to pierce your soul. They can scale vertical surfaces with ease, with their strange gravity-based magic. They make their home within the Sunken forest, scaling up and down the ever-growing sides of the gigantic trees above the bottomless pit, searching for patches of moss to graze on. The Antlers of Ringhorns curve and connect to make a ring shape, hence their names. The horn possesses magical properties and can be framed around, say, a mirror. These Antlers are capable of sending out Magic Waves when the ringhorn feel threatened, that alter and modify the gravity of their target for a short instant.

[edit] In Imoreith Tundra

[edit] Idarik

Size: 4 to 9 feet
Threat: Very Low

Idariks are bird like creature found in Elifga Valley, the Direwind Hills, the Fairy kingdom and many areas of Deeper Felarya. It's fairly large, with a rounded body and two large wings. However, despite these, it has evolved as a flightless bird. The Idariks range in size from that of a large pig up to that of a large cow. However, they pose no danger at all to humans. They have a short head with a long beak for snatching insects out of hard to reach places. They also have, unlike most birds, four legs on it's rotund body. It can flap for a short while and, while being flightless, actually spends a good deal of it's time in trees, hopping from branches and gripping them with it's strong flexible claws. When it does walk on the ground it ends up looking fairly ridiculous, wobbling around on four legs. It is a favored food of predators and are easy to catch if one hunts during the middle of the day - Idariks are fairly lazy and good at hiding, sleeping away their mornings and afternoons. While they have good eyesight, they have fairly poor hearing and instinct and can be snuck up on.

[edit] Snowstalker

Size: 6 feet
Threat: Low alone - Medium in group

A strange creature sporting the body of raptor and the head, back and fins of and abyssal fish. They possess powerful running legs with very sharp talons and hunt in pack. Despite their small size, they are extremely agressive and won't hesitate to attack a squad of adventurers. They can run to great speed with their muscular legs and with frightening silence.
